Charity Choral Night
Charity Christmas Choral Night on Friday 10th December at 7.30pm
There will be a restricted live audience in York Medical Society Rooms and viewing from home will be available via Zoom
Two excellent local choirs are coming to perform for us, both of which have representatives from the health services.
The evening will raise funds for Martin House Children’s Hospice. A local charity which is especially important at this festive time of joy and giving. We hope you will give generous support.
Seats are available in the society rooms although we have limited the audience to 25 people for safety reasons.
People will also be able to join by Zoom link.
The concert starts at 7.30pm and will last approximately one hour.
Our two fantastic choirs are:
CELEBRATION SINGERS
The Celebration Singers are delighted to be invited to appear at this charity choral evening to celebrate the festive season. They will be singing a range of traditional and modern Christmas music, accompanied by local pianist Matthew Palmer.
The group of ten singers are all friends, and some are married to each other! They have been performing for 25 years at weddings, after dinner and local charity events. Their diverse repertoire ranges from choral church music to Gilbert & Sullivan, Lennon & McCartney to ABBA, and stage musical favourites such as ‘Phantom’ and ‘Les Mis’. Past appearances include Castle Howard, Middlethorpe Hall, York Community Choir Festival at Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York Carol Concert at the Barbican, Radio York and Hospital Radio
MIXED BLESSINGS
Mixed Blessings will be singing a range of festive and other songs, including one of their own compositions.
They are a mixed barbershop quartet that started out in 2017, after meeting up at an ‘Extreme Quartetting’ event, although the GP Lead & Bass combination (Simon & Dave) had already been members of the Vale of York Barbershop Harmony Club for many years.
This local male Spirit of Harmony Chorus are always welcoming to new members …just in case anyone here tonight might be interested in signing up?!!
Noey, the baritone, lives in Bristol and has recently retired from a career in teaching.
Mary, an international equestrian competition judge and our tenor, is from Cork.
Quartetting isn’t just about singing love songs, as sometimes ‘life can imitate art’ and Mixed Blessings’ very own in-house example is the marriage of Mary & Simon, which took place last year, just before the first UK ‘lockdown’!
Their first competitive outing was at the International invitational, hosted by ‘The Irish Association of Barbershop Singers (IABS). (The British Association is known as BABS!)
They won a bronze then, back in 2017 & the following year returned to Cork where they won Irish gold medals!
They were due to represent IABS at the World Mixed Competitive Finals due to be held in Germany, last April but the pandemic caused the event to be cancelled – so, this is their first chance over the past 18 months to be able to entertain members of the public….hooray!!
“Thank you to York Medical Society for inviting us to sing for you this evening and especially as the concert is in aid of such a great cause as Martin House Children’s Hospice.”
