A Day in the Life of a Children’s Hospice Doctor – Dr Michelle Hills
Dr Michelle Hills – Specialist Consultant in Paediatric Palliative Medicine and Chief Medical Officer at St Martin House Hospice.
Children’s Hospices provide support for children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families. They are not just about dying; they are about living well. Hospices can provide holistic care including respite stays, support at home, art, music, sibling support, bereavement support, emotional and psychological support, chaplaincy and care after death. With the increasing medical complexity of children who live longer with more treatments and technology it is becoming increasingly important to have specialist nursing and medical support for these children. As a consultant in paediatric palliative medicine, I along with my team, can help provide this specialist medical support, help with complex symptom management, advance care planning, ethical decision making, out of hours support and end of life care in people’s preferred place of death. We need to support children in the hospice itself but also in their home and when they are in hospital. We need to treat, to advocate, to communicate, to coordinate
